The question of intellectual property surfaces almost immediately when commencing the Student Generated Instruction Model. Who owns the rights to the videos that are turned in by the students? Does the school own the rights? Does the student?
In order to be fair to both the school and the student; most programs are having their students release their work into the creative commons. This means the student owns the rights to video and school has permission to distribute the works as long as the student gets attribution and the video is used for non-commercial reasons. The Creative Commons release also allows the student to retain ownership of the video so that it can be used in transfer and resume videos. Here is a step by step explanation of how to release your video work into the the creative commons:
1.Go to www.Creativecommons.org/license
2.Choose your license
You have to choose the type of license you would like to use for your work. The most common license used by students is outlined below:
The next step is to fill in the additional information. This is used if you are going to be featuring your video on a website and makes it incredibly easy to post your license to a website. At the very least; fill in the name of your work and your name for attribution:
Click the “Select a License” button.
3.Email the license to yourself
“Se At the very bottom of this window you will see the “Or, have it emailed to yourself” button. You can click that, fill in the information, and email the license to yourself for future record.
4. Add this .jpg to your film
Here is a .jpg that you can add to the beginning or ending of your work that will show that your video has been released into the creative commons. Just control click or “left click” to download.
